Never a Dull Moment

I know this is not the time of year that most people think of the sort of things that I classify as weird, you know, haunted houses, strange creatures, odd people with quirky behavior and so on, but I just get a kick out of this stuff, so I look out for it year-round. While, you're sitting there on your back deck enjoying the newly arrived spring weather (if and when it ever arrives here in Maryland), I'll probably be sitting in front of my PC, buried in some odd research project, trying to dig up yet more strange info to amuse myself with.

One of the odd books in my collection is a great book called Weird Maryland, which is one of a series of books about weird places in the US - nice to know we're odd enough to make the cut, eh? I consider the book a great starting point for learning more about some of these weird places around here. Even though I've lived here all my life, there were a few in the book that I had never heard of at all.

Like Midgetville, also known as Zoobieville. According to the book, there are at least possible communities of houses built for midgets in the state, but the only one that I have been able to learn more about is the one referred to as Zoobieville. On a message board devoted to hoaxes, there were several people who lived either in the northeast area of Maryland or in Delaware who had heard of or visited at some point, a place known as Zoobieville in that area. Apparently, there is an area up there known as the Valley and that is where this community is located. Rather interestingly, one of the sites that mentioned Zoobieville also made mention of a place in the area called Cult House, stating that it was less scary in the day time, though the post did mention that Zoobieville was "creepy as ever". So, I guess I'm intrigued a bit now. From the sounds of it, it must be somewhere in the area near the Delaware line, as he mentioned that before they went to Zoobieville, they had gone to "the highest point in Delaware", on Ebright Road, which runs between Naamans Road and Namaans Creek Road outside of Wilmington. A different post had talked about a midget community near Smiths Bridge Road so this place may not actually belong in Maryland at all, but rather in Delaware or possibly PA. Hmm...

It is on the PA/DE line. If you are leaving from the Concorde Mall, make a right out of it, and a left at one of the first lights, (old wawa on the right, its been awhile) As soon as you make the left, keep an eye on the right, you should see a dirt path after the only house you pass, at which you'll turn into. You'll see a set of gates, but I've never seen them closed. Thats as easy as I can remember. They say the midgets will come out and attack your car with baseball bats and rocks. I've been there several times and have yet to see any existence of people living there. The houses are very very small. The mailboxes are only maybe 1-1 1/2 foot high rather then the traditional 3ft+. As for the doorways to the house, maybe 3-4 ft high. It's actually quite interesting to see. If they live there, they sure hide well when they see cars come in. I now live in MD, but am heading to Philly in the next few weeks, wouldn't mind making to 20 minute trip to just verify my directions. It is a real location, the creepier part of that area in fact is not the midget village, but its the stories of the DuPont family, and the Santanic church. See: Weird Pennsylvania. I grew up 15 minutes from this place, the stories about the white ford broncos is true, as well as a white mercedes that will follow you. The trees to cut away from the road, and hollowed out tree stomp where the body of a young woman was found back in the 90's is still on that same road. The creepy part is that it is in connection with the ever creepy Byberry Insane Asylum. When Byberry closed and some patients were released, they had no where else to go, some ended up in Beaver Valley (called that because Beaver Valley Rd, I'm not sure if it's considered Concorde or bordering Wilmington) One ex-patient killed a woman and she was found in the trunk of the tree on the Devils Rd. Called that because the trees are said to lean away from the Satanic Church. A group of friends and myself have gotten close to the church, but its surrounded by some sort of pond, by the time we had gotten about halfway around it, someone was in the window, pointing what appeared to be a blue laser pointer at us. Needless to say we stood very still behind the trees for a good 15 minutes and left. No cell reception out there at all. Talk about Deadzone. Let me know if you want better directions: mercedezdd@aol.com

It is definitely there, I seen it once roaming around the valley with some friends. It is very strange, from what I remember not only were the houses small, they had little alleys and hung their clothes between the windows like in the city, and the houses were brightly colored and well kept. I also didn't see anyone, but we only did a two minute loop. If I go back there I will take a video of it, and post it on here.

As "Dirt" said before the road is Beaver Valley Road off of route 202at an intersection with a large Wawa store. From what I've seen it's a campground or some type of lodging for a kids camp, but I may be wrong. There is a house on the narrow (but paved) path and then a gate (which is almost always opened) leading to the small houses. It is interesting to see but nobody I know has ever seen midgets there before. Devil's road (AKA Cossart road) is much more exciting to drive on at night and is only a ten minute drive from Beaver Valley road. Many of my close friends supposedly have been chased by red pickup trucks, but I never have before. All of the trees on the road are bent away from the road and there is always the infamous "dead baby tree" to see as well. Make sure you go at night though because the entire area is beautiful during the day!
